Planning for Effective and Efficient Practice
My basic approach to practicing music in a step-by-step format.
During the pandemic, I was at the end of my DMA degree and thinking a lot about how I practice and ways that I can make this process faster and more reliable. I ended up writing essentially a workbook that I could use and reuse for myself and my students.
Effective and efficient practicing is a form of injury prevention, allowing us to get the same amount done with less effort and physical exertion. Each of us may find very different ways to study and accomplish the same amount of learning, so I wanted my workbook to be more of a guide to explore rather than an exact science.
This workbook is designed to help you organize your practice time so that you get the most out of it, and learn more about yourself along the way. The goal is to make objective observations about your playing and time management so that you don’t let it be a source of anxiety. Making music should be challenging but also fun!
